A unique thorny scrub forest with xerophyte species, Chinnar is the habitat for the endangered Giant Grizzled Squirrel of India.
The last world count of these
squirrels was less than 200. Located in the rain shadow area of the Western
Ghats, unlike other sanctuaries in Kerala, Chinnar gets only 48 days of rain
every year.
Rich in wildlife, the mixed deciduous forests here are ideal for trekking. An extensive Sandalwood forest nearby is an added attraction.
This unique scrub forest abounds in a variety of trees, including the unique thorny scrub forest with Xerophytes species.
The flora of the sanctuary contains dry deciduous forests, high sholas and humid grasslands, Acacia arabica (Karivelam), Acacia leucofolia (Velvelam), Santalum album (Chandanam), Anogeissuslatifolia (Mazhukanjiram), Elaeocarpus recurvatus (Bhadraksham) and Strobilanthus kunthianus (Neelakurinji). It is, indeed, a repertoire of serene greenery ensconcing the luxuriant valley.
The undulating geography with incredible display of craggy rocks further enhances theexuberance of the sanctuary.
The best time to visit the sanctuary is from December to April. For accommodation purposes, private lodges are available at your service at Marayoor, Munnar and Udumalpetta.
Accommodation is also available in the government guesthouses at Munnar and Udumalpetta. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the major attractions in Kerala.
A drive of a few kilometers in the park along the road will introduce you to a variety of bird and butterfly species, especially the Lepidoptera. The park is home to more than 225 species of birds including Peafowl, Bulbul, Flycatcher, Kingfisher, Drongo, Bushchats, Hoopoes and other rare species such as the green-billed malcoha.
Besides these, other wild attractions of the area include animals like the common mongoose, huge mammals such as Elephants and Gaur, some species of deer including sambar and cheetal, a leopard or perhaps even a tiger.
A major attraction is the highly endangered Grizzled Squirrel, which can be seen playing around on the trees near the Chinnar checkpost
This is also an ideal place to watch herds of Bisons march past. Dry deciduous forests, high sholas and wet grasslands add to the diversity of the sanctuary.
As one travels from Karimuthi to Chinnar, Elephants, Spotted Deer, Sambar, Hanuman monkey and even Peacocks can be spotted on either sides of the road.
