Kozhikode (earlier Calicut, anglicized form of Kalikut) means Koyil (Palace) Kodu (fortified). The historical town was the seat of Zamorins.

When Vasco De Gama, the navigator from Lisbon landed at Kappad near Kozhikode, the city was the first in the country to receive a force from a Western country.

Even before the Gama expedition on this land, Arabs and Chinese had established trade relations with Kozhikode.

During the British regime Kozhikode was under Madras Province.

The city has retained its position as the capital of Malabar region and major trading centre of hill-produce.

Tours To Kozhikode is a famous tourist place for its bounteous nature. The green country sides, historic sites, mesmerizing beaches, rivers, hills, wildlife sanctuaries and a totally different culture create the place as a great tourist attraction.

Malabar Mohatsavam from 13 th to 16 th January is a famous festival which represents Kozhikode's rich cultural heritage.

The Bay pore beach of Kozhikode is only 11km away from the city at the mouth of the Chaliyar River.

It is a fishing harbor and world famous ‘Uru' is built here in its traditional ship building yard.

Vadakara which is 48km away from the city is the place where great legendary hero Vadakkanpattu was born. Pervannamuzhi is a hill

station 60km away from the city; it is famous for the dam sites, Crocodile farm, bird sanctuary and boating facility.

Krishna Menon Museum located at the East hill is 5 km away from the railway station by bus. Kappad which is 16km away from the city takes you to the place where Vascoda Gama landed.

Thusharagiri is a water falls that attracts many tourists; a bus ride to the place from the city via Kodancheri is excellent for eye catching water falls.

Kakkadam Pyil is 78km away from the city, the Oorakuzhi water falls and dam are the major attractions. In the early morning one can have a sight of playing Dolphins at Dolphin's point.

Lions Club park, light house and two piers are the other attractions of the Dolphin's point. Malabar house boats offer you a joyful ride on the back water.
