Gorkha
is the birthplace of King Prithvi Narayan Shah the Great, the founder of modern
Nepal. The great King Prithvi Narayan Shah unifying the Nepal in the eighteenth
century and Gorkha soldiers under his dynamic leadership eventually succeeded
in conquering the Kathmandu valley. Since the capital of Nepal was shifted to
Kathmandu. But this beautiful township has always remained as the center of
attraction for many Nepalese as well as foreign visitors.Situated on a hill overlooking the snowy peaks of the Himalaya is a beautiful old palace known as Gorkha Durbar. There are two attractive temples of Gorakhanath and Kali inside the palace precinct. Here is also a small market(Gorkha bazaar). It is primarily a cobbled street market place where by people from neighboring hill dwellings come to trade. Below the ten meters of palace's southern side, is the holy cave temple of Gorkhanath.
Gorkha can be reached in about six hours by road from Kathmandu and four hours from Pokhara. A side trip to Manakamana temple on the way to Gorkha is very enjoyable and interesting.
