The Sheetla Mata Fair is held in March-April, the month of Chaitra on Krishna Paksh , in village Seel-Ki-Doongri (Jaipur). Doongri is a hillock on top of which the shrine of Sheetla Mata stands.
The fair is held in her honour for a day every year. The fair attracts hordes of visitors from far and wide.
People believe
that epidemics spread because of the wrath of Sheetla Mata and hence they worship
her and make offerings so that she may be pacified. The deity is represented
by a red stone.
The village Seel-Ki-Doongri is situated beside a tank known as Band Sheodungri. It lies on the (NH-8) Jaipur-Kota road 35 kms south-east of Jaipur and 5 kms. from the tehsil headquarter, Chaksu.
The nearest rail head is Chaksu on the Jaipur-Sawai Madhopur section of Western Railway. Regular buses are available on the Jaipur-Kota, Jaipur-Tonk, Jaipur-Deoli routes which pass by this village.
It is said that if the wrath of Sheetla Mata is let loose, then epidemics spread. This fair is held to make offerings and worship the deity to please her and keep her pacified. In the shrine, a red stone represents the deity.
Thousands of pilgrims visit the fair and it is customary to cook one's own food and eat it only after offering the food to the deity in the shrine.
A small cattle fair is also organized where rewards are given to the breeders who have the best quality of livestock. Rural people can be seen trading over shoes, clothes, food, utensils and agricultural implements.
Sheetla Mata Fair is held in the month of either March or April in the village of Seel-Ki-Doongri. This village is located in Jaipur. Conveyances are available to arrive at this fair site. The fair is held in the month of Chaitra (Hindu calendar) on Krishna Paksha.
Sheetla Mata is worshipped as the goddess of epidemics. Hence every year during springtime a pooja is performed to appease the goddess. A fair is also held on this occasion and people from all over the state participate in it
The shrine of Sheetla Mata houses a red stone representing the deity. Legend has it that it is the rage of Sheetla Mata that leads to epidemics. So, in order to calm and placate the Mata, devotees pray to her and make offerings. Devotees from across the miles come to visit this fair and pray to Sheetla Mata. At the time of the fair, a temporary market comes up. The villagers are seen doing business for various items like shoes, clothes, foodstuff, utensils, agricultural implements, etc. Another attraction is a cattle fair organized during the fair.
