Maharaja
Umaid Singhji who built this palace was fascinated with western lifestyles so
he marshalled the services of a well-known Edwardian architect, Henry Vaughan
Lanchester, a creditable equal of Edward Lutyens (architect of New Delhi) to
construct a three hundred and forty seven roomed Umaid Palace.
This was to become India last of the great palaces and the biggest private
residence in the world. Spectacular Central Rotunda,
the cupola rises to a hundred and five feet high the Throne Room with its exquisite Ramayana murals
An elegant wood-panelled library, and even a private museum; an indoor swimming
pool, a Billiards Room, tennis courts and unique marble squash courts makes
Umaid Bhawan Palace is unabashedly the most magnificent.
The palace was also built with superficial intentions of providing employment
to famine stricken farmers. The Palace now is a five star deluxe palace hotel.
This beautiful palace was specially constructed for Umaid Singhji, the Maharaja of Jodhpur and is set in the midst of 26 acres of manicured lawns.
Believed to be one of the largest private residences in the world the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, North India was constructed specially in the Indo-Colonial and art deco style.
This Jodhpur palace was constructed during the years 1929 to 1943 and more than 3,000 workers, artisans and craftsmen worked together to give shape to this magnificent building that stands proud on the Jodhpur sands.
All the rooms at the Umaid Bhawan Palace still have the original furniture that was specially ordered to complement the design of this massive and plush hotel. Jodhpur, one of the charming Rajasthan cities, is rich in cultural heritage and is also replete with a number of majestic monuments that include the forts, palaces and cenotaphs in Jodhpur.
These structures apart from being visually impressive are also brilliant manifestations of the superior architectural skill of the period. The Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur is not only a popular tourist attraction in Jodhpur, but also in entire Rajasthan. The splendid palace has undergone refurbishment as a heritage hotel and is one of the most pleasurable retreats where the guests can experience luxurious comforts.
Built of yellow sandstone the Umaid Bhawan Palace gives the impression of rising from the yellow Jodhpur sand like a vision or a dream. Once you step inside the palace that has now been converted into a palace hotel you are pleasantly stricken by the inherent opulent and regal charm that envelops you.
The quarters of the Maharaja and Maharani are the star attractions at the Umaid Bhawan Palace Hotel and have the choicest selection of strikingly good-looking furniture that are in sync with the silken tapestries and expensive wall hangings.
The museum of the palace is highly recommended for its display of weapons,
an array of stuffed leopards, a huge banner presented by Queen Victoria and
an incredible collection of clocks.
