Getting to Singapore | Getting Around Singapore

By Train
If you’re enterings Singapore via Malaysia or Thailand, you may consider taking a train. There are two train services available:

The luxurious Eastern & Oriental Express allows you to travel in style and comfort, while experiencing the mystical wonders of Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Bookings can be made via the website.

The KTM trains offer a comfortable and efficient ride into Singapore from Malaysia. For bookings, please email the request form available at their website.

Alternately, you may wish to book online via their e-ticket services.

By Air
The air transport industry is a driving force in the development of civil aviation and airport operations in Singapore.

The Air Travel Industry sees four million passengers per year.

Changi Airport is served by more than 70 airlines flying to more than 160 cities in 53 countries, putting Singapore's aviation needs well into the future.

By Taxis
Taxis are everywhere, can be hailed on the street and, for a family of four over short distances, are going to be about the same price as the MRT but more convenient.

We used them a lot. In the Chinatown area we found a few drivers whose English was limited, so having your destination written down would be a help, preferably with an address.

By Buses
Singapore has the same cool double-decker buses you loved in London, and they
go all sorts of places in and outside the city area for low prices.

They can be hard to navigate with a stroller or lots of things to carry (like babies) and the routes are not obviously evident.

Best used with explicit directions from someone who knows their way around.

Singapore, together with Malacca and Penang, the two British settlements in the Malay Peninsula, became the Straits Settlements in 1826, under the control of British India.

By 1832, Singapore had become the centre of government for the three areas. On 1 April 1867, the Straits Settlements became a Crown Colony under the jurisdiction of the Colonial Office in London.

With the advent of the steamship in the mid-1860s and the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, Singapore became a major port of call for ships plying between Europe and East Asia.
